Smoothed Analysis of Binary Search Trees.
Theoretical Computer Science, 378(3):292-315, 2007.
Website anzeigen | Zusammenfassung anzeigen
Binary search trees are one of the most fundamental data structures. While the height of such a tree may be linear in the worst case, the average height with respect to the uniform distribution is only logarithmic. The exact value is one of the best studied problems in average-case complexity. We investigate what happens in between by analysing the smoothed height of binary search trees: Randomly perturb a given (adversarial) sequence and then take the expected height of the binary search tree generated by the resulting sequence. As perturbation models, we consider partial permutations, partial alterations, and partial deletions. On the one hand, we prove tight lower and upper bounds of roughly @Q((1-p)@?n/p) for the expected height of binary search trees under partial permutations and partial alterations, where n is the number of elements and p is the smoothing parameter. This means that worst-case instances are rare and disappear under slight perturbations. On the other hand, we examine how much a perturbation can increase the height of a binary search tree, i.e. how much worse well balanced instances can become.

Dynamic Kernels for Hitting Sets and Set Packing.

Computing small kernels for the hitting set problem is a well-studied computational
problem where we are given a hypergraph with n vertices and m hyperedges, each of
size d for some small constant d, and a parameter k. The task is to compute a new
hypergraph, called a kernel, whose size is polynomial with respect to the parameter k
and which has a size-k hitting set if, and only if, the original hypergraph has one.
State-of-the-art algorithms compute kernels of size k d (which is a polynomial as d is a
constant), and they do so in time m · 2d poly(d) for a small polynomial poly(d) (which
is linear in the hypergraph size for d fixed). We generalize this task to the dynamic
setting where hyperedges may continuously be added or deleted and one constantly
has to keep track of a size-k d kernel. This paper presents a deterministic solution with
worst-case time 3d poly(d) for updating the kernel upon inserts and time 5d poly(d)
for updates upon deletions. These bounds nearly match the time 2d poly(d) needed by
the best static algorithm per hyperedge. Let us stress that for constant d our algorithm
maintains a hitting set kernel with constant, deterministic, worst-case update time that
is independent of n, m, and the parameter k. As a consequence, we also get a deter-
ministic dynamic algorithm for keeping track of size-k hitting sets in d-hypergraphs
with update times O(1) and query times O(c k ) where c = d ? 1 + O(1/d) equals
the best base known for the static setting.

Proper learning of k-term DNF formulas from satisfying assignments.
Journal of Computer and System Sciences, 106:129-144, 2019.
Website anzeigen | Zusammenfassung anzeigen
In certain applications there may be only positive examples available to learn concepts of a class of interest. Furthermore, learning has to be done properly, i.e. the hypothesis space has to coincide with the concept class, and without false positives, i.e. the hypothesis always has to be a subset of the real concept (one-sided error). For the well studied class of k-term DNF formulas it has been known that learning is difficult. Unless RP=NP, it is not feasible to learn k-term DNF formulas properly in a distribution-free sense even if both positive and negative examples are available and even if false positives are allowed.
This paper constructs an efficient algorithm that, for fixed but arbitrary k and q, if examples are drawn from q-bounded distributions, it properly learns the class of k-term DNFs without false positives from positive examples alone with arbitrarily small relative error.

Learning Residual Alternating Automata.

Residuality plays an essential role for learning finite automata.
While residual deterministic and nondeterministic
automata have been understood quite well, fundamental
questions concerning alternating automata (AFA) remain open.
Recently, Angluin, Eisenstat, and Fisman have initiated
a systematic study of residual AFAs and proposed an algorithm called AL*
-an extension of the popular L* algorithm - to learn AFAs.
Based on computer experiments they conjectured
that AL* produces residual AFAs, but have not been able to give a proof.
In this paper we disprove this conjecture by constructing a counterexample.
As our main positive result we design an efficient
learning algorithm, named AL**, and give a proof
that it outputs residual AFAs only.
In addition, we investigate the succinctness of these different FA types in more detail.

Security Levels in Steganography - Insecurity does not Imply Detectability.

This paper takes a fresh look at security notions for steganography --
the art of encoding secret messages into unsuspicious covertexts
such that an adversary cannot distinguish the resulting stegotexts from original covertexts.
Stegosystems that fulfill the security notion used so far, however, are quite inefficient.
This setting is not able to quantify the power of the adversary and thus leads to extremely high
requirements. We will show that there exist stegosystems that are not secure with respect to
the measure considered so far, still cannot be detected by the adversary in practice.
This indicates that a different notion of security is needed which we call \emph{undetectability}.
We propose different variants of (un)-detectability and discuss their appropriateness.
By constructing concrete examples of stegosystems and covertext distributions
it is shown that among these measures only one manages to clearly and correctly
differentiate different levels of security when compared to an intuitive understanding
in real life situations. We have termed this \emph{detectability on average}.
As main technical contribution we design a framework for steganography
that exploits the difficulty to learn the covertext distribution.
This way, for the first time a tight analytical relationship between the task
of discovering the use of stegosystems and the task of differentiating between
possible covertext distributions is obtained.
